How (not) to decorate for the holidays

We bought a real live Christmas tree the other day. Apparently, this is the first year that most people have seen them available to buy. Most everyone (if they celebrate Christmas) has artificial trees. Well, next year we might just get an artificial tree after the "Christmas Tree Catastrophe" which is outlined below in deceivingly good-humored pictures :)

Well, firstly, we didn't expect to have to pot our tree...it still had all the roots attached. Which keeps the tree alive longer (this is the nice aspect). But the process of actually potting a Christmas tree inside an apartment with a very curious puppy was the not so nice aspect! Here's the tree: looks harmless enough:

Our Albanian friend, Diana (who is staying with us for a few weeks [you may also recognize her face because she is a member of our youth staff]) helped me buy decorations and put them on the tree. It was fun. Listening to Christmas music, enjoying the pine scent (of my Yankee "Christmas wreath" candle), and getting in the holiday spirit.

It does look a little Charlie Brown-ish, doesn't it?

Then, out of nowhere later that evening, the tree came crashing down because the dirt has settled after I watered it. It was off kilter...and toppled over. Christmas balls, lights, mud, dirt and pine needles went everywhere! (Good thing we have all tile floors!) And good thing the Christmas balls are not glass. They just bounced all over the room. Oakley had a hay-day. He loved eating the dirt for some reason.

So then we were set with the task of RE-POTTING our Christmas tree in our living room. Wow. We will definitely get an artificial tree next year. If potting was difficult and messy, RE-POTTING was even more difficult and more messy! Kreshnik and Diana helped us a great deal.

We were tired and dirty and all scratched up from the branches, but it was...fun...and a little frustrating.

Ahhh, lessons learned :)
